ACTFL Statement on SCOTUS Decision to Strike Down Student Loan Forgiveness

ACTFL strongly opposes the recent decision by the Supreme Court to strike down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. This decision will have major negative implications for our collective ability to recruit and retain a well-prepared, diverse, and highly effective language teacher workforce.

ACTFL Statement on SCOTUS Decisions to Strike Down Race-Based Policies in College Admissions

ACTFL expresses deep disappointment and concern regarding the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), in which it ruled that colleges and universities can no longer consider race in the admissions decision-making process. Ignoring decades of judicial precedent, the decisions rendered in both Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina pose a grave threat to the future of the language educator pipeline and significantly undermines this nation’s ability to create a more equitable education system and society.

ACTFL Board of Directors Votes to Keep Future Conventions Out of States with Anti-Transgender Laws

Members of the ACTFL Board of Directors unanimously passed a motion on May 22, 2021, that will exclude any yet-to-be contracted locations with current or pending anti-transgender legislation from future consideration to host the ACTFL Convention until such legislation is overturned or reconsidered.

ACTFL Statement in Support of the Transgender, Non-Binary and Gender Nonconforming Communities

ACTFL is alarmed by the recent wave of proposed and, in some cases, passed state legislation targeting transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming individuals. This type of legislation is discriminatory, it is born out of hate and scapegoating, and is antithetical to the values of ACTFL and the language education profession. We unequivocally condemn these cruel pieces of legislation.
