The Call for Proposals application is closed.

The purpose of the ACTFL Research Priorities Project is to support empirical research on six current priority areas critical to improving world language education at the P-16 and adult education levels. Proposals can initiate a new research study, support/expand a study underway, or explore an emerging research area that is connected to one or more Research Priority areas. Selected proposals are funded by ACTFL and completed research will be submitted for peer-reviewed publication in Foreign Language Annals.

The Call for Proposals application is closed.

Who can apply?

ACTFL members who work in P-16 and adult world language learning contexts may submit one application as a first author and be listed as a second or third author on one additional application. Priority will be given to applicants who have not received an award within the past three years.

How are the proposals selected?

After the deadline, the Research and Assessment Committee and select reviewers rate the proposals to support quality and innovative research. Preference is given to research projects that use official ACTFL tests.

What will happen next?

Applicants will be informed of the selections in November 2025. Feedback will not be provided to applicants beyond a notification of the decision. Selected studies will receive a grant of up to $3,800 from ACTFL to help defray some of the research costs: a $2,500 initial grant, and the remainder upon submission of the research article to Foreign Language Annals and the completion of a short report. Recipients are expected to apply to present their research at the 2026 ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo in San Antonio, TX, and agree to grant Foreign Language Annals the right of first refusal of any articles that emerge from the research. Recipients will have one year after the award to finish their research, and may apply for up to a one-year extension to finish the project.
