ACTFL Publication Proposal Form

The following guidelines outline elements to include when writing and submitting a proposal to ACTFL. A well-developed proposal should be concise (e.g. 4-5 pages) and include the following points listed below. In general, the ACTFL publishing committee would like to know how your book will make a meaningful and unique contribution to your field.

The Proposal

  1. Overview:
    1. Provide a one to two paragraph(s) summary of the book.
    2. What is the intended publication format (e.g. edited volume, textbook)?
    3. What is the working title of the book?
    4. What is the anticipated length of the book in chapters or word count?
    5. What is the anticipated completion date for the text?
  2. Market:
    1. Why would this book be of interest to world language education practitioners and/or researchers?
    2. Who is the primary audience for the proposed book?  Are there any secondary audiences for the publication?
    3. Is there a primary course or level intended for the book?
    4. How does this book support ACTFL’s dedication to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of languages?
    5. What other disciplines/courses could be served by the text, if any?
  3. Book:
    1. In 3-4 sentences, what is the book’s purpose?
    2. How does this book differ from other books on the same subject? Cite at least two competitor texts. Compare these texts to your text by examining areas such as topical coverage, organization, pedagogy, or approach. Be sure to clarify what your book offers that the competitors do not.
    3. What will this book add to our knowledge of teaching and learning languages?
    4. What features do you plan on including that might ensure coherence across chapters of the proposed book (e.g. guiding questions, vignettes, case studies)?
    5. Will figures, tables or illustrations play a role in the proposed book?  How many figures do you anticipate including?   
    6. Do you envision any supplementary material for the book (video, online, other multimedia, etc.)?

    1. Provide a complete table of contents in outline form to visualize the overall structure of the text. Also, include a 2-3 sentence description of each chapter.
