Scholarships and Grants

The programs described below are provided solely for the information of ACTFL members. These are not ACTFL programs, and they have not been subjected to any review or vetting by ACTFL. Their presence here does not constitute an endorsement by ACTFL. One can apply for multiple scholarships. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Previous winners of a scholarship are not eligible to apply for the same scholarship.

  • 1-2 letter of recommendation must submitted on your behalf. Applications without recommendations will be considered incomplete. Please share the recommendation link with a colleague or supervisor to complete online by the application deadline. The recommendation form can be found here:


  • Arab Academy Scholarship: One (1) online scholarship for 3 months of access to the online Arabic program in addition to 1 weekly one-on-one speaking class. One (1) onsite scholarship for 2 weeks of Arab language in its center in Cairo.


  • SpeakMandarin Scholarship: Two (2) scholarships for an online intensive course of live 1-on-1 Chinese lessons, customized to your level, with our certified instructors in Beijing (30 sessions total to be completed within 6 weeks).





  • Awards for study abroad offered by National Academic Honor Societies for foreign languages, e.g. Pi Delta Phi (the National French Honor Society), Sigma Delta Pi (the National Spanish Honor Society), etc., For example, information on the Pi Delta Phi scholarships and awards are here:
  • The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) offers merit-based scholarships to U. S. high-school aged students for overseas study of seven critical foreign languages: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajik), Russian and Turkish. The NSLI-Y program is designed to immerse participants in the cultural life of the host country, giving them invaluable formal and informal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.
  • The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program offers scholarships to American high school students to spend the academic year in countries that may include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mali (semester), Morocco, Oman, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, and Turkey. This post 9/11 program focuses on increasing understanding between people in the U.S. and countries with significant Muslim populations.
  • The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) was established in 1983 to celebrate German-American friendship based on common values of democracy. Secondary school students live with host families, attend local schools, and participate in community life in Germany. Young professionals (undergraduates) and high school graduates of vocational studies ages 18-24 study and participate in practical training.
  • The American Youth Leadership Program offers opportunities for American high students and educators to travel abroad on a three- to four-week-long exchange program to gain first-hand knowledge of foreign cultures and to collaborate on solving global issues. Several different organizations implement this program, and each has organized an academic and experiential educational exchange focused on dialogue and debate, leadership development, and community service.
  • David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.
  • The Goethe-Institut offers German teachers in the USA scholarships for various professional development courses in Germany. Whether your interests are in local culture, methodology and didactics, or in improving your language skills, our comprehensive selection of professional development seminars offer you an opportunity to improve your skills and experience Germany.
