Critical and Social Justice Approaches

Mission Statement

The purpose of the ACTFL Critical and Social Justice Approaches (CSJA) SIG is to promote and support critical and social justice approaches in language instruction. Topics of interest in this field include critical pedagogy and critical theory, transformative learning, community engagement and service learning, critical language awareness, emancipatory pedagogy, among other humanitarian topics in language learning. Our mission is to cultivate a community of educators committed to consciousness raising and community action in and through language education. This group will function as a space where members from different instructional contexts and languages can come to learn, to share, and to mentor.
