Title IV, Part A Coalition Statement Calls for Full Funding of ESSA’s Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants program

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Title IV, Part A Coalition, comprised of more than 75 national organizations, including the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), released the following statement in response to the House Labor HHS Education Appropriations Subcommittee’s decision to provide $1 billion in FY17 to the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants Program (SSAEG):

“The Title IV, Part A Coalition applauds the House Labor HHS Education Appropriations Subcommittee’s decision to provide $1 billion in FY17 to SSAEG, the new flexible block grant program established in the Every Student Succeeds Act. SSAEG is designed to allocate funding to nearly all of America’s school districts, allowing them to invest in vital health, safety, academic and technology programs and services. While the Subcommittee would not fully fund SSAEG, we are encouraged by its actions and words in support of this most important program.

“Additionally, we extend our deepest appreciation to several House members who supported full funding for SSAEG: House Education & the Workforce Chairman John Kline (R-MN) and Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-VA); and Representatives Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Katherine Clark (D-MA), and Elise Stefanik (R-NY). This progress on funding would not have occurred without their strong advocacy.

“When the House Appropriations Committee meets later this month to mark-up the FY17 Labor HHS Education Appropriations bill, we urge its members to support full funding of SSAEG at $1.65 billion.”
