Alexandria, VA  - The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is proud to announce Dr. Julie Sykes as the new Editor of the association’s quarterly scholarly journal Foreign Language Annals (FLA).  She will serve a three-year term as Editor, beginning in January 2020 and ending in December 2022 with the Winter 2022 issue.

Dr. Sykes has a rich and varied scholarly background. She has taught courses on second language teaching and learning, methodology and research, language learning and technology, Hispanic linguistics, and interlanguage pragmatic development. Her current research focuses on applied linguistics and second language acquisition with an emphasis on technological and pedagogical innovation for interlanguage pragmatic development and intercultural competence. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals on computer-assisted language learning (CALL)-related topics, as well as book chapters and encyclopedia articles. A frequent presenter at regional and national language conferences, Dr. Sykes is also co-author of the book, Language at Play: Digital Games in Second and Foreign Language Teaching and Learning.

Additionally, Dr. Sykes has received multiple awards in recognition of her contribution to language education. She was the recipient of the Article of the Year, CALICO Journal award in 2007, the California Lutheran University’s Young Alumni of the Year award in 2012, and the University of Oregon Innovation and Impact Award in 2018, among others. She has also been the Chair of the Language Resource Center Coordinating Council since 2015.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Sykes, a national leader in the use of digital technologies for language acquisition, who has participated on the ACTFL Interculturality Task Force since 2015 and made multiple contributions to Foreign Language Annals and The Language Educator over the years. As the Director of the Center for Applied Second Language Studies and an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Oregon, Dr. Sykes is highly qualified to take on the position as the new editor of Foreign Language Annals,” said ACTFL President Lisa Ritter.

ACTFL is also exceedingly grateful to Dr. Anne Nerenz for her expert leadership of Foreign Language Annals since 2012 when she began as Interim Editor and now completes the second of her two three-year terms in 2019.

Foreign Language Annals is the official journal of ACTFL, first published in 1967. FLA is a refereed journal published four times per year.
