ACTFL Announces New Keynote Speaker for 2019 Annual Convention and World Languages Expo

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is pleased to announce Raghida Dergham as its new Opening General Session Keynote Speaker for the ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo in Washington, DC, on November 22, 2019. Her keynote address is entitled, “Dare to Differ: Empowerment, Respect, and Inclusion.”

Raghida Dergham is Founder and Executive Chairman of Beirut Institute and Columnist for the National. She has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, Al Joumhouria, Huffington Post, Arab News, Al Arabiya English, and Newsweek. She was a political analyst for NBC, MSNBC, and LBC for eight years as well as a contributing editor for Global Viewpoint produced for the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. Dergham is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an Honorary Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association and served on the International Media Council of the World Economic Forum. She is on the Development Advisory Committee of the InterAcademy Partnership, a global network of science academies, as well as the Advisory Committee of the International Women’s Media Foundation.

Dergham has broken the glass ceiling multiple times and inspired many young women to become political commentators and analysts. She has made more than a thousand appearances as a global affairs specialist and expert on the United Nations. A frequent lecturer at universities, think tanks, and business councils, she has spoken at Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, and Georgetown. Featured in the PBS Documentary Caught in The Crossfire, Dergham is quoted in several books in many languages.

Raghida Dergham was named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in the Arab World in 2018, Arab Woman of the Year in 2017, and one of the 100 Most Powerful Arab Women in 2011 and again in 2016. “I am very excited that ACTFL Convention attendees will experience Raghida Dergham as our Opening Keynote this year. Her experiences will allow her to convey a strong message on empowerment, respect and inclusion to the audience”, said Lisa Ritter, ACTFL President.

The ACTFL Opening General Session will be held in the Ballroom of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November 22, 2019.
