ACTFL Announces 2nd Annual Proficiency Training Summer Institute Workshops

Alexandria, VA—The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is pleased to announce that in response to the growing demand to acquire skills in proficiency-based instruction and assessment, the 2nd annual Proficiency Training Summer Institute has been expanded to two convenient locations: Brigham Young University and the University of Maryland. The workshops will take place from June 9-12, 2015, in Provo, UT and June 22-25, 2015, in College Park, MD.

Participants will have the opportunity to register for one of ten ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment language workshops (including recently added Portuguese) and deepen their understanding of proficiency based instruction and assessment as well as:

  • apply key principles of teaching and testing for proficiency to curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
  • establish program goals in terms of performance outcomes.
  • determine student placement, progress, and performance.
  • articulate within and across language programs.
  • become eligible to apply for OPI certification.

Participants may prefer to register for a Modified Oral Proficiency Interview (MOPI) Assessment Workshop, an intensive two-day introduction to the techniques of administering and rating the Oral Proficiency Interview at the Novice and Intermediate levels. Participants have the opportunity to observe live demonstration interviews conducted by their trainer. Under the trainer’s supervision, they then conduct their own practice interviews with volunteer candidates. (Note: the MOPI is being offered at BYU only.)
