WHITE PLAINS, NY – The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is proud to announce that as of April 22, 2016, the number of currently certified ACTFL OPI Testers has reached 1,000. This is the first time in the certification program’s 34-year history that this has been achieved. The growth of the network of Testers to 1,000 today represents a doubling of the number from just 5 years ago and includes Testers located throughout the world in 34 languages.

ACTFL President Pete Swanson hailed the achievement. “This significant accomplishment signals the increased momentum that teaching and testing for proficiency has taken in academic institutions across the country from PreK-12 through postsecondary. Language educators are now better able to assess their students’ language proficiency and benchmark their programs according to proficiency outcomes.”

ACTFL OPI Testers are specialized language professionals who have completed a rigorous training process and have met the criteria established for certification by ACTFL. The awarding of certification as an ACTFL OPI Tester is validation of the Tester’s understanding of the principles and concepts of oral proficiency testing and of the ability to apply theory to practice. Certification as an ACTFL OPI Tester acknowledges the Tester’s ability to elicit and rate ACTFL oral proficiency interviews (OPI) according to ACTFL OPI testing and rating protocols with a high degree of rating reliability using the ACTFL OPI Rating Scale.

In celebration of reaching the 1,000 milestone, a commemorative article looking back at the history of the ACTFL OPI Tester Certification program and benefits of being certified will be published in the August/September 2016 issue of ACTFL’s magazine, The Language Educator. To learn more about how to become a certified ACTFL OPI Tester, visit the ACTFL website here or contact ACTFL at opicert@actfl.org.
