We are once again heartbroken by another horrific school shooting in the United States, this time in Uvalde, TX. We grieve with the entire Robb Elementary School community. In 2022 alone, there have been 27 school shootings—and this comes on the heels of a racist-driven shooting that targeted Black shoppers in a supermarket in Buffalo, NY, and an attack that was directed at Taiwanese churchgoers in Laguna Woods, CA, all in the past two weeks.
As ACTFL has stated many times before, educators and students should never feel unsafe in their teaching or learning environments. Moreover, parents and caregivers should not have to worry after morning drop-off if their children will be coming home safely later that day.
Our state and federal policymakers must do more to ensure the physical safety and mental health of our school communities. ACTFL will continue to lend its voice to support legislative pathways that would protect our members, the education community, and the public-at-large, from the scourge that is gun violence in this country.
ACTFL has collated some resources for addressing tragedy and trauma, mental health, and social-emotional learning (SEL). Please share as you see fit—and check in with your colleagues.
