Educator Spotlight

Meet Yutian—a lecturer of Mandarin Chinese at the University of California, Davis.

“Teaching a language means beginning a journey of exploration and guiding students into a world where culture, values, and ways of thinking are embedded within the language itself."

Career Highlight

Students grow from not being able to say a single sentence in Chinese to gradually sharing their own stories—both their joys and their struggles—in the language. I can clearly observe their progress day by day, and their improvement is truly measurable. Moments like this make me love teaching languages.

On Being an ACTFL Member

My favorite part of being an ACTFL member is the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow within a truly supportive professional community.

First, through ACTFL conferences and workshops, I have learned immensely from both research-based pedagogical discussions and practical classroom strategies. Seeing senior colleagues who are actively engaged in ACTFL has been especially motivating—they serve as role models of the educator and mentor I hope to become one day.

Secondly, ACTFL fosters a welcoming and inclusive community where members genuinely feel a sense of connection and belonging. Within this space, we share both moments of joy and frustration, and there is a deep understanding of the challenges and growth that language educators experience.
