Educator Spotlight

Meet Leonardo—a Spanish teacher at Brookland Middle School (Washington, DC).

“Teaching a language means creating bridges.”

The Start of a Teaching Journey

I was inspired to be a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of students. For me, teaching is not only grammar or vocabulary, it is about creating fun and meaningful experiences. With a playful methodology, my classes are more than lessons, they are moments where students enjoy, participate, and feel motivated to learn a new language. What inspires me is to see how these experiences stay in their memory and give them confidence for the future.

Career Highlight

One of my most fulfilling moments has been creating cultural projects that connect students with real life. For example, I recorded dialogues with my daughter about Colombian traditions, sports, and food, and used them in class as authentic listening resources. Students not only learned vocabulary, but also discovered culture in a personal way.

Another memorable experience was my work in the Hospital Classrooms Program in Bogota, Colombia. I taught children who, due to medical conditions, could not attend regular schools. I designed differentiated lessons across subjects and grade levels, always adapting to their individual needs and interests. This work showed me that teaching can bring hope and dignity even in the most challenging circumstances.

On Being an ACTFL Member

I joined ACTFL because it connects me with a professional community that values language learning and cultural understanding. My favorite part is the opportunity to share and learn innovative practices, and to feel part of a global network of educators who inspire me to grow and keep improving.

As the 2025 DCPS World Language Teacher of the Year, I value spaces like ACTFL that allow me to share, learn, and connect with colleagues who are equally committed to advancing languages and cultures.

Using Languages Outside the Classroom:

Languages have played an important role in my personal and professional life. They have helped me travel, connect with other cultures, and even create special projects with my family—like recording dialogues with my daughter in Spanish.

Outside the classroom, languages give me identity, pride, and the chance to inspire others to dream bigger.

Advice for Next-Gen Teachers

My advice is: Do not only teach grammar or vocabulary, but create experiences. Use music, games, culture, and stories to make your students feel the language is alive. Remember that every student has potential, and your passion can inspire them to believe in themselves.

Favorite Word or Phrase in Another Language

"Todo lo que creas en tu mente lo puedes hacer realidad.” This means: Everything you create in your mind, you can make real. I chose it because it reminds me and my students that dreams and goals are possible if we believe and work for them. It is not only about motivation, it is a way of life.

On Teaching a Language

Teaching a language is giving students the chance to dream bigger, to travel with their minds and hearts, and to see themselves as part of a global community. It transforms the classroom into a space where curiosity, culture, and communication come alive.
