Educator Spotlight

Meet Evelyn—a Spanish teacher at Bethlehem Central High School (NY).

“Teaching a language means sharing the world.”

Career Highlight

Having students reach out after graduating—sharing with me their experiences using their language skills in college and in life in general. It's very fulfilling to see them appreciate what they initially acquired in the classroom.

On Being an ACTFL Member

Without a doubt, the Convention is my favorite part of being an ACTFL member. The energy of being surrounded by so many talented educators is humbling and inspiring. I come back to the classroom feeling renewed and energized.

Using Languages Outside the Classroom

I use them in life. Speaking a language different than my mother tongue on a daily basis keeps me aware of the blessing that it is to know more than one language. Educating my own children to be bilingual and keep the connection with their heritage is truly priceless.

Advice for Next-Gen Teachers

Find your passion and be yourself. Find what inspires you and apply it to your own style. Be flexible and always open to learning something new. We're always learning.

Favorite Word or Phrase in Another Language

This year I have been saying to my students: “Hagan bien y no miren a quien” (Do good without looking at who). I like the inclusivity of it. Let's be nice without being selective. Everyone is worthy of kindness.

On Teaching a Language

I have seen many of my students liken the culture learned to their own personal backgrounds, and that means so much to me.
