Meet Andrew White—a Spanish teacher at Phoenix Union Bioscience High School (AZ).
“Teaching a language means giving learners the keys of empathy and compassion to unlock doors of global understanding.”
The Start of a Teaching Journey:

What motivated me first as a learner was a sense of wonder that the world was bigger than my immediate surroundings and experiences. Multiple and diverse cultural products, practices, and perspectives were and still are a source of passionate interest for me.
My high school German teacher opened many doors of learning and opportunity for me, and I wish to give my students the keys to unlock doors of understanding with empathy and compassion.
Career Highlight:
The most fulfilling moments of my teaching career so far have been seeing the success of my students on AP Spanish Language & Culture and AP Spanish Literature & Culture exams.
This is particularly meaningful because this head-start to college for them creates countless ripple effects for my learners and their families. It is a privilege and a responsibility that I hold dear to my heart.
On Teaching a Language:
In addition to the above, teaching a language involves planting seeds of multiple perspectives; suspending judgment; understanding cultural products, practices, and perspectives; and inspiring this generation of learners to interact with confidence and respect.
