The ACTFL Convention & World Languages Expo is committed to creating a more accessible, inclusive experience for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing attendees. We are actively working to expand opportunities for full participation so that every attendee can engage meaningfully with the breadth of the event.
New this year, we are introducing expanded access to help you experience all 600+ sessions—without needing to select sessions in advance based on accommodation availability. Our goal is to increase flexibility, equity, and ease of participation throughout the convention.
What to Expect
-
ASL Interpretation
ACTFL will provide ASL interpreters for General Sessions and for presentations designated with Applicable Language = ASL. -
Access to All Sessions
For all other sessions and events, attendees are encouraged to use the built-in Live Caption feature available on most mobile devices. This approach allows greater access across the full program, supporting a more flexible and inclusive experience. -
Front Row Seating for Accessibility
Presenters will be asked to reserve front row seating to support Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing attendees who are using personal devices for live transcription during sessions. - Bring Your Own Personal Interpreter
Attendees may choose to bring someone to live interpret for you. Contact ACTFL in advance if you choose this option so that we can arrange access for your interpreter.
We recognize that accessibility is an ongoing effort, and we are committed to continuing to improve how Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing attendees experience the convention. Your participation and feedback are essential as we work to build a more inclusive event for all.
Ways to access session content on your personal device (phone, tablet, etc.)
Here are some live translation apps and instructions on how to access them on your device.
VRS/interpreting tools
Even if interpreters will be provided, VRS apps are critical backups for spontaneous conversations, networking receptions, hallway discussions, and emergencies. Companies such as Sorenson, Convo, Tive VRS provide alternatives for interpreting backup.
