ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is available in Form E, which is appropriate for learners in grades 3 and 4. The AAPPL Form E is an assessment of Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS), as defined by the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, in which learners participate in a simulated conversation with a virtual chat partner. It is developed for young learners.

Languages: The AAPPL Form E is available in Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, and Spanish.

Proficiency Range: The AAPPL Form E targets the Novice and Intermediate proficiency ranges as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

Scores: Results are evaluated by ACTFL-certified raters. The AAPPL Form E identifies a proficiency range and a performance score based on the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners.

Time: On average, test takers require approximately 30 minutes to complete this assessment.

The AAPPL Form E includes animated videos of a teacher who guides learners through the test to provide an age-appropriate introduction to the AAPPL. In addition, the test begins with 3 practice items which are not scored. Test takers can repeat the practice items as many times as needed to ensure that they are comfortable with the test format and tasks.

Topics, Tasks, & Practice

AAPPL Form E topics are provided to encourage practice with the language. Note that they are very general in nature. Working across all content domains and across broad contexts experienced outside of the classroom encourages the development of communicative abilities and is key to taking a proficiency-oriented approach.
