Summer Institute Workshops

ACTFL’s Center for Assessment, Research, and Development (CARD) is happy to announce its 2019 Proficiency & Performance Summer Institute! Registration is open for all workshops listed. Registration is processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once a section has filled, any additional interested registrants will be waitlisted in case of an opening. All workshop sections must also meet minimum registration requirements to be confirmed, and ACTFL reserves to right to cancel a section if minimum registration is not met.

Please take a few minutes to read all information below before making your registration.

Please do not make any non-refundable travel and lodging arrangements until receiving confirmation from ACTFL regarding registration requirements for your language section. PLEASE NOTE: Participants are responsible for their own travel, hotel, and other expenses.

Workshop Cancellation Policy

All cancellations are subject to a $100.00 processing fee unless made within forty-eight hours of initial registration. Any cancellation made within four weeks prior to the start of the workshop will be subject to complete forfeiture of registration fee. All efforts will be made to find a substitute participant, in which case a total refund will be issued.

Please note that early bird registration deadlines are two months before the start of a workshop and regular registration deadlines are one month before the start of a workshop.

2-DAY Modified OPI Assessment Workshop

May 20-21, 2019

This two-day workshop introduces the ACTFL rating scale, the structure of the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and techniques of administering and rating the OPI, including its applications in the language classroom. Participants observe and conduct live practice interviews at Novice and Intermediate proficiency levels. Participation in a MOPI Assessment Workshop is the first step toward becoming an ACTFL Certified OPI Tester with Limited Certification.

Writing Guidelines Familiarization

May 22, 2019

Intended as an introduction to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012 – Writing, this workshop introduces participants to the major and minor level descriptors and the criteria for assigning a global writing proficiency rating. Participants explore a variety of writing tasks across levels of proficiency, evaluate language samples based on the criteria as described in the guidelines, and design appropriate writing activities and writing assessment prompts at the four major levels

2-DAY Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) Rater Training Workshop

June 5-6, 2098

The two-day WPT Rater Training Workshop introduces participants to the ACTFL Writing Scale and the protocol for rating the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) at all levels of proficiency. Participants will become familiar with the assessment criteria for writing, the structure of the WPT, and will gain practice in applying the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012Writing to the rating of samples in their target language (when available). Following the workshop, participants will be eligible to apply for Full WPT Rater certification.

OPI Familiarization

Intended for all language professionals, this one or two-day workshop familiarizes participants with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, ACTFL Rating Scale, and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. Participants will hear samples at each proficiency level and discuss the implications of proficiency for academic and professional purposes. The two-day option provides additional emphasis on the implications and applications for instruction and can be customized to address specific program needs and goals.

AAPPL Familiarization

This one-day introduction to the ACTFL Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is intended for all language professionals. This workshop will link proficiency and performance to show how these concepts both inform the AAPPL and can be used to assess growth in the three modes of communication. Identifying the traits of Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced learners will be addressed and ideas for moving students along the continuum will be discussed. Participants will articulate learning goals and in addition to creating work to rubrics and activities for their classrooms based on the proficiency and performance-based constructs presented in the workshop.

  1. After completing the workshop, participants will be eligible to pursue ACTFL OPI Tester Certification, if desired. Participants may apply for certification in any language regardless of the language of training.
  2. Registrants intending to apply for Full OPI Tester Certification must participate in a 4-day OPI Assessment Workshop.
  3. Registrants intending to apply for Limited OPI Tester Certification may participate in either a 4-day OPI Assessment or 2-day Modified OPI Assessment Workshop.

IMPORTANT: As prerequisite to qualify to attend all workshops above as well as apply for ACTFL OPI Tester Certification, registrants must be affiliated with an academic institution as defined by ACTFL, have an undergraduate degree in a related field, and have a minimal proficiency level of Advanced in the language of training. An academic institution is an accredited school, college, or university where foreign languages are taught. The term affiliation with an academic institution is defined as a current faculty and/or staff member who is involved in the instruction or evaluation of language students. Private language companies that offer translation services or language testing do not qualify under ACTFL's definition of an academic institution. Also, private for-profit companies do not qualify.

Registration fees do not include any travel, lodging, personal meal, or personal expenses related to participation in the workshop. The cost for registration is determined by ACTFL membership status. ACTFL members may register at discounted rates and will need to provide the ACTFL Membership ID to qualify for discounted rates. Membership must be paid before registering for a workshop. Registrants who pay for membership after registering will not be reimbursed for the difference in rates.
