AAPPL Tasks & Topics

The AAPPL is designed to emphasize the relationship between classroom performance and real-world language proficiency. While spontaneity is a hallmark of proficiency, proficiency does not develop spontaneously. In keeping with our motto, “practice makes proficient,” ACTFL releases general topics annually that allow teachers to create classroom- and homework-based opportunities for students to practice tasks across all modes of communication within familiar contexts.

ACTFL’s Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) brings the 5 C’s of the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages into a modern proficiency and performance-assessment environment. To that end, students are presented with a series of tasks in each communication mode. These tasks are informed by the functions described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

To facilitate your curriculum planning, we provide an overview of the topics associated with each communication mode addressed in the test. Click on the test below to see the topics:

Practice with Tasks & Topics

While topics generally reflect the content areas for the AAPPL, ACTFL encourages educators to work across a wide variety of content domains to encourage the development of communicative abilities across the broad contexts experienced outside of the classroom. This is key to taking an overall proficiency-oriented approach. A table of tasks for each communication mode by proficiency level can be found here.

Classroom Resources

AAPPL is an assessment of proficiency and performance designed to complement classroom-based language learning. Some resources to help incorporate a performance and proficiency model include:.

  • AAPPL Communication Builder:  ACTFL provides an online practice tool called AAPPL Communication Builder (CB). CB allows educators and independent learners to create AAPPL-inspired activities for target language practice across all modes of communication.
  • ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners: ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners describe language performance that is the result of explicit instruction in an instructional setting. The Descriptors provide a framework upon which classroom assessment can be based (e.g. function, context, text type, etc.).
  • NCSSFL - ACTFL Can-Do Statements: The NCSSFL – ACTFL Can-Do Statements are organized according to the modes of communication from the World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning. They are meant to provide accessible statements that can be used by educators to articulate learning objectives that are learner-friendly.
  • ACTFL Grade-U-Lator: The ACTFL Grade-u-lator is an online tool that assists teachers, schools, and administrators in converting ACTFL ratings to number and letter grades. It is exclusively available to adopters of the AAPPL through Language Testing International. Learn more here.
