AAPPL Rater Application

ACTFL is seeking raters for the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency (AAPPL) language testing program who share our commitment to principled language assessment and instruction. AAPPL raters use rubrics based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012 to make accurate, evidence-based ratings of student performance on two components of the assessment: Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS) and Presentational Writing (PW).

This is a consulting role, not an ACTFL staff position. Successful applicants will complete an online training and certification process; then upon certification as AAPPL raters, they work as independent contractors for Language Testing International (LTI), the language testing office of ACTFL.

If you are proficient in one of the languages listed below, we invite you to read this role description and apply. We especially encourage teachers of these languages to apply. If you are applying to be an AAPPL rater in more than one language, please complete a separate application for each language.

Please note that authorization to work in the United States of America without sponsorship is a requirement for this role. Possession of a student (H1B) visa is not sufficient for this role.

The application deadline is Monday, April 23, 2018. If your application is successful, you will be contacted with further information about the online training and certification process.

We are seeking AAPPL raters in five languages that are currently assessed – French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The AAPPL is a large-scale language assessment that addresses the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. More than 350,000 AAPPL assessments are delivered annually to K-12 students. The three modes of communication are assessed in separate components: Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS), Presentational Writing (PW), Interpretive Reading (IR) and Interpretive Listening (IL). Raters rate student performance on the ILS and PW components only. Learn more about the AAPPL.

The role consists of four main responsibilities, with the busiest periods of the year being mid-March through early June, and November through early December:

  • Complete the AAPPL rater certification process successfully and in a timely manner, and complete re-certification processes as and when required
  • Rate ILS and PW samples accurately, reliably, and in a timely manner
  • Participate in norming sessions to prepare for the two busiest rating periods, and in readiness activities to maintain the rating standards between busy periods
  • Be responsive to ACTFL's AAPPL quality assurance (QA) advisors for your language(s), as well as to LTI and ACTFL staff, in support of rating and QA activities

Successful candidates will complete an online training and certification process that will take approximately 20 hours. A proficiency level of at least Advanced Mid (as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012) is required in both speaking and writing, in each AAPPL language for which the candidate is applying.

We believe this could be a particularly exciting and relevant opportunity for K-12 teachers of world languages and/or ESOL.

Please fill in this application as completely as possible. We estimate the application will take 15 minutes to complete.
