actfl startalk multi-state pathways to teaching

Thank you for your interest in applying to participate in the STARTALK Multi-State Pathways to Teaching Program, organized and facilitated by ACTFL and the State Departments of Education of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The application deadline is May 15, 2020.

Before Applying

  1. Please make sure you have read and understand the minimum requirements for participation as well as the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page.
  1. Please review the certification requirements in your state so you know what is required of you. This STARTALK program provides PARTIAL fulfillment of the state teaching certification requirements:
  1. Make sure that you will be able to participate in all phases of the program.
  • Phase 1 is online and will be every Wednesday (except July 1) from June 17—July 15, 2020.
  • Phase 2 will be either in-person and/or virtual (location TBD) from Wednesday, July 22 through Wednesday, July 29.
  • Phase 3 is online and will be every second Wednesday of the month (excluding November) from August 12, 2020 to February 10, 2021.
  • Phase 4 includes any additional work by the participant to complete certification requirements, with support from program staff. The amount of time this takes will vary depending on each participant’s circumstances.

Materials Needed to Apply

The application will take some time to complete. To make the process faster, please make sure to collect all the necessary materials before starting the application.

You will need:

  • Your contact and background information including name, gender, job title, employer (and website URL if a school), home address, phone number, email address, U.S. residency status, and STARTALK language.
  • Documentation of your bachelor’s degree (transcript, diploma, transcript evaluation, etc.) in a PDF, DOC, or DOCX file to upload. If your degree is from outside the United States, please collect your transcript evaluation from an agency such as World Education Services.If you have not yet obtained your transcript evaluation, please prepare a note indicating this in an MS Word document.
  • Oral Proficiency Interview Certificate (in STARTALK language) in a PDF, DOC, or DOCX file to upload OR a description in a PDF, DOC, or DOCX file of why your speaking proficiency is Advanced Low or higher, based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (pages 5-6).
  • Writing Proficiency Test Certificate (in STARTALK language) in a PDF, DOC, or DOCX file to upload OR a description in a PDF, DOC, or DOCX file of why your writing proficiency is Advanced Low or higher, based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (pages 11-12).

Be thinking about:

  • Your prior teaching experience and/or skills you have developed that would prepare you as a teacher.
  • Your prior experience (if any) with STARTALK-funded summer programs, including program names, years you participated, and in what role(s).
  • Your interest in teaching in public schools and at what grade levels
  • Your prior coursework or experiences (such as student-teaching) that would contribute to the requirements for obtaining teacher certification
