Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Video and Tool Kit

This video is the first in a series of ACTFL webinars regarding the background, funding opportunities, and rollout of the Every Student Succeeds Act, also known as ESSA. Passed in late 2015, ESSA replaced No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and essentially expands the roles and responsibilities each state has in implementing its specific education system.

The most noteworthy provision for World Language advocates is Title IV-A which establishes Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants (SSAEG). These grants must be solicited by State Educational Agencies (SEAs) in order to provide assistance to Local Education Agencies (LEAs). SSAEGs contain tens of thousands of dollars for the purpose of “providing students with a well-rounded education,” which includes “foreign languages.”

Watch this 20-minute video to learn more about Title IV-A as well as other relevant ESSA provisions included in the law. This webinar series is a joint organizational initiative provided by ACTFL, JNCL-NCLIS, NADSFL and NCSSFL.
