Described and Captioned Media Program

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of the Deaf, the Described and Captioned Media Program website has resources for students who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind. In addition to language arts resources on subjects such as communication, mass media, composition and study skills, there is an extensive library of Spanish language resources. By registering as a member, teachers, administrators, parents, and families can borrow accessible media free of charge.
French Video Clips

Developed by professors and technologists at Colby College as a curricular resource, Venez Voir Le Sénégal centers around six short video clips shot in and around Dakar. The clips are narrated in French with links to French transcriptions. The final movie clip, Les Rues de Dakar, lacks narration, so students can be given the assignment to download the entire clip from the website, import the file into a video editor such as Apple’s iMovie, and add a voice track.

The Confucius Institute at Michigan State University was established in collaboration with China Central Radio and TV University under the authorization and sponsorship of China’s National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. According to the website, its objective is “to meet the ever-increasing demand for Chinese education in the U.S., providing quality Chinese learning materials and experience to both K–12 students and adults, and helping train qualified teachers of Chinese.” The site includes “Do It Yourself Chinese,” a word of the day, Chinese chat podcasts, and online Chinese courses for high school and middle school students.
Russian Lessons from the Voice of Russia

“Russian for You” is a series of lessons from the Voice of Russian Broadcasting Company. The lessons include how to ask and answer situational questions, Russian words and expressions, proverbs and sayings, and poetry and prose. The fourth lesson is a musical one. The Voice of Russian website at www.ruvr.ru also has the news in Russian as well as the English translations.

Dr. Janice Siegel, assistant professor of Classics at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, VA, has put together a digitized and expanded database of her “Audio-Visual Materials in Classics,” which is published biennially in an issue of Classical World. While some of the material is offered for purchase, other resources are available free over the Internet.
Yiddish Radio Project
