LangNet is a state-of-the-art online foreign language learning and maintenance system developed by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. This system is offered free of charge to foreign language faculty, administrators, and students at U.S. institutions. LangNet materials include practice in reading and listening in the following languages: Amharic; Arabic (Modern Standard, Iraqi, Gulf, Sudanese, Levantine, Egyptian); Bengali; Chechen; Chinese; Dari; Farsi; French; Greek; Gujarati; Haitian Creole; Hindi; Italian; Korean; Kurdish (Sorani); Pashto; Persian; Quechua; Russian; Somali; Spanish; Tagalog; Turkish; Turkmen; Urdu; and Uzbek. The system is designed for foreign language learners who generally range from advanced beginners to near native speakers (i.e., proficiency levels ILR 1+ to ILR 4). While the materials are developed primarily for maintenance and enhancement of language skills outside an instructional setting, their use is encouraged in conjunction with language courses. To access LangNet, academic users must apply for a username and password.

Deutschland is published six times a year by Societäts-Verlag, Frankfurt am Main, in cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office, Berlin.

New Latin and Greek Podcast Website

This new website only has a few Greek readings at the moment, including readings from Rouse’s “A Greek Boy at Home.” However, its owner plans to expand with more podcasts as time goes by and all podcasts are archived.

The LinguaVista website allows language learners to find highlevel language programs in the United States and abroad. The user can search by language (e.g., “Arabic”) and program type (e.g., “domestic academic year”) and the website will generate a report of programs matching these criteria. The report will display relevant program information, including program location in the United States, point of contact, e-mail address, Internet address, level of language courses offered, degrees offered, and cost and tuition information.
