Fellowships for Minority Students in International Public Policy

College and university minority students interested in using their language studies to pursue a career in international public policy, and their professors, may be interested in learning more about the Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UNCF Special Programs Corporation. IIPP Fellows receive scholarships and services, and over five years participate in opportunities that include study abroad, intensive foreign language training, and internships.

Dialects and Languages of America

The American Dialect Society is dedicated to the study of the English language in North America and the other languages or dialects that influence or are influenced by it. Each year, the organization solicits nominations for words of the year, and some involve wordplay using English and other languages. For example, one nomination in 2007 was Googlegänger: “a person with your name who shows up when you Google yourself.”

The guide offers a set of seven research-based recommendations intended to be used by teachers to assist in decision making, and which they can apply according to their specific needs in organizing their instruction.

The U.S. Department of Education unveiled this new website in September 2008 as an online resource for information for students in preparing and paying for college, but it also features inspirational stories and real-life experiences of students who are already attending college. There is also information for teachers and counselors about how they can help their students, as well as key links to other government resources for educators to use as they work with students who are preparing for and selecting a college.
