This free site has lessons, conversations, and podcasts in many languages. Students can utilize native language proficiency to teach and learn from other Livemocha members. Languages include English, French, Hindi, German, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese, and the site promises there are more languages to come. Language tutors are also available to answer questions.

Available for download in PDF format, this online handbook is an introduction to strategies and resources that can help students in their study of the Arabic language. It has been developed under the auspices of the National Middle East Language Resource Center (NMELRC). It is primarily for the beginning student, but intermediate and advanced students may also benefit from the information in the handbook.

Russian Language Resources

Russnet, the Russian Language Network, is a Russian language field resource center. It provides Russian-language learning services and products that include information, language modules, courses, materials, in-service teacher training, databases, discussion forums, and gateways to other Russian language resources. Funding for the creation of Russnet came in part from the Ford Foundation. Other sponsors of Russnet online projects include the U.S. Department of Education, the American Council of Teachers of Russian, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

While some of the news stories may work as teaching tools, others may be too disturbing for teachers to use with younger students. Updated UCLA Language Materials Project

This site has a database of detailed bibliographic references to teaching materials and authentic materials for more than 150 less commonly taught languages, which can be searched by type of material, level of instruction, and audience type (including K–12). There are also detailed profiles covering the geography, sociology, and linguistic history of more than 100 of the languages. In addition, the site hosts the Center for Applied Linguistics database of short references to teaching materials published before 1987 for more than 900 languages.
