South Asia Language Resource Center

The South Asia Language Resource Center (SALRC) at the University of Chicago is a collaborative effort by a number of institutions that focuses primarily on the needs concerning South Asian language pedagogy in American universities. It is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s International Education and Graduate Programs Service. It supports online resources in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Pashto, Sindhi, Tamil, Tibetan, and Urdu. There are links to additional resources, as well as a blog that can be accessed on the site. SALRC also publishes an online journal, South Asia Language Pedagogy and Technology.

Children’s Stories in Spanish

The Milcuentos site has children’s stories in Spanish and with sound. Some stories are very familiar, such as “Thumbelina,” “The Three Little Pigs,” Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Peter and the Wolf.” Other stories on the site include “A Happy Dragon,” “I Want to Be Different,” and “Maricoco and Her Chicks.”

Guide to Master’s in Teaching Programs

This site includes a list of accredited universities that offer Master’s in Teaching degree programs, including online programs. Also included are answers to questions about types of Master’s in Teaching degrees, transfer of credits, and career opportunities. Links provided on the site allow users to fill out a request form for more information from individual schools.

Express Pathway to Educational Data

The U.S. Department of Education launched the interactive website ED Data Express to help make accurate and timely educational data available in a single place. Users are able to access data collected by the National Center for Education Statistics, The College Board, and the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The site has a State Snapshots feature as well as a Data Element Explorer for selecting one data element to view across all states and the nation.

German Children’s Network

SWR Kindernetzwerk has a number of videos on topics such as the environment and technology, sports, animals, school and work, and politics and society. The site also has quizzes, games, and news, as well as the German children’s television program Oli’s Wilde Welt.

Online Games about France

Academic Technology, Languages and Culture

Around the World in A.cademic T.echnology Ways (The World A.T. Ways) site is subtitled “Adventures in Education, Languages, Culture and the New Web.” The blog’s creators are Kevin Gaugler, associate professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Marist College, and Barbara Lindsey, who has directed the Multimedia Language Center at the University of Connecticut since 1996. As Gaugler notes, each week they explore socially mediated technologies and show how to harness their popularity to engage all language learners, reinforce the 5 Cs of the National Standards, and prepare students for life in a global, teamwork-oriented world. They also invite others to send questions and share their experiences.

Learning Children’s Songs in French

The project on this site is designed for children ages 6 to 9 to learn French songs. It has karaoke, exercises, and games for songs such as Promenons-nous dans and Monsieur Fantôme.

The Virtual Body in Spanish and English

Mandarin Chinese Resources from UNC

The School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill makes parts of online textbooks for learning Mandarin Chinese available on its LEARN NC website. A guide for K–12 teachers to teach about Vietnam using LEARN NC’s slideshows is also available on the site.

Russian for Everyone

The Russian for Everyone site was developed by TLT Network and Julia Rochtchina, who teaches Russian language and culture at the University of Victoria, Canada. It includes eight units of grammar lessons, lessons on Russian letters and the sound system, as well as summary tables, exercises, and Russian language games.

Japanese Junior Eco Club

The Japanese Junior Eco Club is for children age 3 through high school, and its website features the children’s activities, including planting rice in bottles and making a cherry kurafuti, as well as projects such as river cleanup, and monitoring and surveying wild birds. There are also reports on trips to places such as museums and an ocean classroom.
