K–12 Gateway to the Less Commonly Taught Languages

The UCLA Language Materials Project has launched a new site
for elementary and secondary foreign language teachers. The
core of the site is a complete set of downloadable lesson plans
and supplementary materials for teaching a first year language
class. Written in English, the plans can be adapted to any
language and grade level. In addition, there is a section on
curriculum design, standards, and proficiency-based teaching.
A resource section offers links to National Language Resource
Centers, language teachers’ associations, teachers’ forums, assessment
guides, and professional development opportunities.
The Gateway was created with support from the Department of
Education’s Title VI International Research and Studies program.

Interactive Workbook of Spanish Exercises

Más arriba is an interactive workbook of introductory Spanish
language exercises based on the pictorial contextualization of
fundamental vocabulary and language points. Created by Gary
Aitken, professor of Hispanic studies at Trent University in
Ontario, Canada, the material includes drawings, sound clips,
instant feedback, and vocabulary help.

Korean Language Learning Site

The zKorean site includes an introduction to Korean characters,
Korean–English and English–Korean dictionaries, grammar lessons,
vocabulary lists, and articles.

Science Resource in French

The á la Cite site’s Le Laboratoire page includes lab experiments,
quizzes, and interactive games in French. Topics include physics and
biology.

Toolkit for Culture Projects

The CultureQuest Project Toolkit features a teachers’ guide, timeline,
and checklist for projects that involve the examination of aspects of
culture that include values, ceremonies, food, literature, and education.
According to CultureQuest, the projects are inquiry based, collaborative,
curriculum and standards based, and technology intensive.

This site allows you to create a customized jeopardy template without
PowerPoint. The games you make can be played online from anywhere
in the world. Building your own jeopardy template is easy using their
simple editor. Not interested in building your own? You can also

Collection of Online Videos

The Pratiks site features how-to videos in French with a website interface
available in French, English, and German. It also has a forum to
encourage interaction and community-building.

Audiria

Audiria is an online tool which supports Spanish learning by offering
a wide variety of multimedia audiofiles. This site offers a new
audiofile daily and these files are also archived and organized by level
of difficulty. Each audiofile is also associated with a set of support
exercises and activities.

African Language Materials Archive

ALMA is a multi-partner project focusing on the promotion and
documentation of literature and literacy in the languages of Africa.
It further serves to assist African language authors and publishers in
publicizing and distributing their work. Their new website contains
complementary materials including African language video recordings,
documentary video, translation work, and bibliographies.

e-Arabic Learning Portal

The eArabic Learning Portal provides a reference and access point to
e-Learning resources and projects designed, developed, and led by
Mourad Diouri to support the learning and teaching of the Arabic language
at the Centre of the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW).

and transcripts, as well as a list of vocabulary words defined in Latin.

Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition

CARLA is one of the U.S. Department of Education’s National
Language Resource Centers, whose role is to improve the nation’s
capacity to teach and learn foreign languages effectively.
CARLA offers a number of resources to language teachers
including a battery of second language proficiency assessments
and a working paper series. The latest working papers
released in 2009 include “Bridging Contexts, Making Connections:
Selected Papers from the Fifth International Conference
on Language Teacher Education” and “Maximizing Study
Abroad: An Instructional Guide to Strategies for Language and
Culture Learning and Use.” Both of these, along with others,
are available for ordering online from the website.

Interactive Calendar Charts

Software for using interactive calendar charts is available
from a British company in several languages (English, German,
French, Spanish) and can be downloaded free of charge for
use with language learners. These charts show the days of the
week, months, colors, and numbers. Color copies can either be
downloaded and printed free of charge or may be used interactively
on the screen—when a user clicks on a particular word,
children’s voices say the words in the relevant language.
