The primary objective of the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University is to promote collaboration in teacher education and foreign language research across college, departmental, and institutional boundaries. Among its free online resources are QuizBreak, which allows teachers to create Jeopardy-like games for the classroom; Scribbles, a program for teachers of non-Roman script languages; and multimedia interactive modules for education and assessment. CLEAR’s Rich Internet Applications include broadcasts, worksheets, and conversations, among others. The FL listserv provides a forum for language educators to share information and resources with one another, and CLEAR News is available as a PDF on the CLEAR website.

Multimedia Chinese Dictionary

Life in New China, Images and Words from Beijing Youth, is a multimedia dictionary created by young students at the Shuren School outside Beijing. It includes 60 slides, each depicting a word, with the word written in Chinese and English. The word is then used in a sentence in Chinese and English. An audio track accompanies each slide.

Creating Crosswords and Other Puzzles

Celebrations Lesson Plans for April and May

Developed by instructor Deborah Byrnes at the College of Education, Department of Elementary Education, Utah State University, this site has lesson plans for different celebrations held around the world. These are some that are held in the upcoming months:
- Cambodian New Year is based on the lunar calendar and is celebrated in mid-April, lasting for three days. The lesson plan for grade levels 2–4 is at http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/camb.n.y.html.
- In April, there is a festival in Japan called Hana Matsuri, or Flower Festival, that celebrates Buddha’s birthday. The mini-unit on the Hana Matsuri celebration is for grade levels 5–6 and can be found at http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/work.html.
