Foreign Language Annals
Background and Content
Foreign Language Annals (FLA) is the official journal of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The first volume of FLA was published in 1967. FLA is a refereed journal published four times per year. There are approximately 10 articles per issue.
Dedicated to the advancement of language teaching and learning, the journal seeks to serve the professional interests of classroom instructors, researchers, and administrators concerned with the learning and teaching of languages at all levels of instruction. The journal welcomes submissions of the highest quality that report empirical or theoretical research on language learning or teaching, that describe innovative and successful practice and methods, and/or that are relevant to the concerns and issues of the profession. All submissions must be written in English and must be previously unpublished.
Foreign Language Annals focuses primarily on language education for languages other than English. The journal welcomes manuscripts on a wide variety of topics including cross-disciplinary submissions that provide clear implications for teaching, learning, and/or research in the language field. Authors must be members of ACTFL.
FLA accepts from 10% to 20% of manuscripts submitted for publication. More than 175 manuscripts are submitted to FLA per year.
The Interim Editor of Foreign Language Annals is Anne Nerenz, Eastern Michigan University, and the Managing Editor is Michael Everson.

Circulation and Audience
All of ACTFL’s more than 12,000 members receive FLA as a benefit of membership. In addition, more than 1,000 academic libraries subscribe to FLA. Only institutional subscriptions are available to nonmembers. 2012 Institutional rates: US$313 (the Americas), US$413 (Rest of World), €202 (Europe), £161 (UK) (the cost includes a subscription to ACTFL’s The Language Educator).
Information for Authors
All submissions to FLA are done electronically through our manuscript-processing system, Editorial Manager. Interested authors should review submission information to gain a better understanding of the focus and scope of the journal as well as the style and format of manuscripts. More specific manuscript guidelines also are available. The manuscript review process takes 4 to 6 months. The voluntary work of reviewers is acknowledged in two ways. In the summer volume of FLA each year, we publish the names of all active reviewers in the past year. We also send out letters of appreciation of professional service for reviewers’ performance files.
In a 2004 study in System that measured the number of times articles are cited in other journals, FLA was named the top journal in its field (System 32, pp. 357-361).
