Yo Azama, a Japanese teacher at North Salinas High School in Salinas, CA, was named the 2012 National Language Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) at the organization’s annual convention held in Denver, CO.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) announced today a process to revisit the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning to make explicit the link of the standards for learning languages with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. ACTFL is working with the Standards Collaborative Board, which led the initial creation of national standards for learning languages, the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages (NADSFL), and the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) to revise the standards and embed them in the teaching of languages at all levels.  The National Standards redefined language learning around five goal areas that emphasize acquiring proficiency through real world use of another language: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

The ACTFL Board of Directors has named Martha Abbott as the Executive Director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

ACTFL Executive Director Bret Lovejoy announced his departure from the organization during a recent Board meeting. "After 8 years guiding ACTFL through a period of membership growth and financial achievement, I am ready to move on to new challenges," said Lovejoy. ACTFL President Barbara Mondloch added, "We are grateful to Bret for his service and contributions to ACTFL during this period." The Board has initiated a search for Mr. Lovejoy's successor and hopes to have a new Executive Director in place before the end of the year.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has announced that Clarissa Adams Fletcher, a Spanish (Level II through AP) teacher from Dunwoody, GA, has been selected as the 2011 National Language Teacher of the Year. The award was presented at the 44th ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo in Boston, MA today.

Barbara Rupert, the principal of Brookdale Elementary School in the Franklin Pierce Schools in Tacoma, WA, was elected as president-elect of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).  The election results were announced at the association’s November Annual Convention and World Languages Expo in San Diego, CA.  Rupert begins a three-year term on the ACTFL Board of Directors Executive Committee and will serve as ACTFL President in 2011.

Lisa Lilley, a Spanish teacher at Central High School in Springfield, MO, has been selected as the 2010 National Language Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).  The award was presented at the association’s 43rd Annual Convention and World Languages Expo in San Diego, CA on November 20, 2009.

In a statement released today, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) strongly cautioned education administrators not to rely on alternative language learning methods that reduce the critical role of classroom teachers. 

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has announced the appointment of University of Iowa educator Leslie L. Schrier as Editor of Foreign Language Annals, the association’s quarterly scholarly journal.  The award-winning publication, now in its 42nd year, is dedicated to expanding the awareness and understanding among language education professionals of current research, pedagogy and challenges facing the profession.  Dr. Schrier replaces Dr. Sheri Spaine Long, who completed her 3-year term in the position and is moving to the editorship of Hispania.
