Alexandria, VA (May 22, 2013) -- During the National Teacher Appreciation week, which took place May 6-10, 2013, US Department of Education’s Secretary, Arne Duncan recognized Mr. Noah Geisel as the National Language Teacher of the Year—an award presented by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages annually.

Alexandria, VA (May 20, 2013) – The ACTFL Board of Directors with leadership of the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages (NADSFL) and the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) have released a position statement to describe how four major initiatives in education in the U.S. today connect with language learning.  Local, state, regional, and national perspectives are represented in this position statement, as an additional 70 organizations provided input and comment.

White Plains, NY (March 28, 2013) – The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages is proudly announcing  the summer OPI assessment workshop that will be held at Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, from July 18-21, 2013 for the following languages: Spanish, Hebrew, German, French and Portuguese. 

Alexandria, VA (March 21, 2013) —  ACTFL will be sponsoring STARTALK  summer professional development courses for teachers as well as language and cultural development programs for students this coming summer 2013. The programs include concentration in Chinese and Russian for teachers and Arabic, Chinese and Russian for students.

Alexandria, VA (March 18, 2013) – ACTFL is pleased to announce stage 2 of Phase II of its ongoing Research Priorities Project. The purpose of Phase II is to support empirical research on five priority areas that are critical to improving foreign language education:

Alexandria, VA (March 11, 2013) — ACTFL is excited to announce the Keynote Speaker at the 2013 ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo opening general session. The opening session will take place in the morning of Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Tony Wagner will be this year’s speaker. He will deliver the keynote address on the topic of “Creating Innovators with Passion, Play and Purpose”.

Alexandria, VA (February 15, 2013) – ACTFL is pleased to announce Phase II of its ongoing Research Priorities Project. The purpose of Phase II is to support empirical research on five priority areas that are critical to improving foreign language education:

White Plains, NY (February 8, 2013) – ACTFL is pleased to announce the first ever spring OPI assessment workshop to be held at  The Graduate Center, CUNY in New York City, on June 4-7, 2013 for Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.

Alexandria, VA (December 12, 2012) – ACTFL, in partnership with Print Management, Inc., has been honored with a Bronze Award in Monthly Trade Association Magazine in Association TRENDS’ 2012 All-Media Contest for its publication The Language Educator. It was one of more than 420 entries in the association publications contest.

“We are so pleased to be in the winners’ circle this year. We’re proud of the great work our staff has put into The Language Educator to communicate with our members,” comments Marty Abbott, ACTFL Executive Director.      

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) recognized E.E. Waddell  Language Academy located in Charlotte, NC during the 2012 ACTFL Annual Convention as the recipient of the ACTFL Melba D. Woodruff Award for Exemplary Elementary Foreign Language Program. This award recognizes programs that are exemplary in five areas: Program Model, Curriculum, Staffing, Advocacy and Achievement.
