Call for Proposals from the U.S. Department of State, Youth Programs Division for Summer Institute in Chinese and Arabic.  The announcement for the Summer Language Institute for American Youth has been published in the Federal Register.

SENATE BILLS INTRODUCED: S. 1089 (Akaka, D-Hawaii), the "National Foreign Language Coordination Act of 2005", to establish the National Foreign Language Coordination Council to develop and implement a foreign language strategy (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions).  The Secretary of Education would be one of the members of the Council.

The President signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (HR 2669 ENR), after an earlier veto threat to the House bill. Included in the bill are The TEACH Grants, representing $375 million of mandatory federal spending to prepare new teachers in colleges and universities. Because this is mandatory spending, funds will be available every year without going through the annual appropriations process. This is truly a landmark investment in teacher quality.
