UT Governor Testifies About Language; Hearings Scheduled; Sequester Anticipated

On February 5, the House Education and the Workforce Committee held a hearing on the Challenges and Opportunities Facing America’s Schools and Workplaces. The headline witness was Governor Herbert from Utah. He highlighted UT’s Dual Immersion Language (DLI) program as one of three key state initiatives in which they link education and workplace needs. He claims that the efforts (along with STEM, and a post-secondary initiative) produce a strong state that is attracting business. Herbert promoted strong student data related to language learning (ie. students perform better, have better attention control, and increased problem solving abilities).

In other news, there are more hearings scheduled:

  1. Senate Budget Committee Hearings: The Senate Budget Committee has announced two hearings for next week:
  2. Senate Appropriations Hearing: This is not yet officially announced but the Senate Appropriations Committee is planning a hearing on 2/14 on the impact of the sequester on domestic programs featuring administration witnesses.
  3. House Education and the Workforce Subcommittee Hearing: “How Education Innovation Can Improve Student Achievement”will be held on Feb. 14.

Finally, there continues to be chatter about the sequester going into effect (potentially for the short-term) and today there is news that agencies are making employees aware of possible furloughs. Read more.
