Summer Professional Development Program for Teachers of Russian

WHAT:
Two separate, intensive, two-week professional development programs focused on quality instruction, curriculum and assessments for teachers of Russian.

The first session in Fairfax, VA, July 2-13 (no class July 4) focuses on Integrating Technology into the Teaching and Learning of Russian.  This course will focus on teachers working to develop an electronic classroom site and creating activities that are linked to the language learning modules on RUSSNET.  Participants will be provided training in creating Russian Language lessons using Smart Tools on a SmartBoard. 

The second session in Glastonbury, CT, July 16-27, focuses on Standards-Based Instruction and Learning in Russian Language. This course is designed to provide teachers with the theory associated with effective classroom instruction to develop students' communicative competency in Russian. There will be an emphasis on the role of the teacher as an instructional planner in a student-centered classroom that effectively matches curriculum, instruction, and assessment to identified learner outcomes.

WHO: This program is open to both current teachers of Russian and those who are interested in teaching Russian.
WHERE:
There will be two program sessions, one in Fairfax, VA and a second offered in Glastonbury, CT.
WHEN: July 2-13, 2012 in Fairfax, VA, (Integrating Technology into the Teaching and Learning of Russian) and July 16-27, 2012 in Glastonbury, CT, (Standards-Based Instruction and Learning in Russian Language)

There is no cost to teachers selected for the program. Each teacher will receive a $400 travel stipend for successful program completion. Limited housing is available for teachers who reside outside the local area. Graduate credits are available.

Summer Professional Development Program for Teachers of Chinese

WHAT:
Two separate, intensive, two-week professional development programs focused on quality instruction, curriculum and assessments for teachers of Chinese.

The first session, July 2-13 (no class July 4) focuses on 21st Century Skills and Chinese K-12 Standards. This course is designed to provide information on aspects of creating a Chinese curriculum that is standards-based and incorporates skills necessary for the 21st century.  Participants will be expected to be familiar with Grant and McThige’s “backward design” model.  Part of the course will be devoted to focusing on assessments as they relate to 21st century skills. 

The second session, July 16-27, focuses on Standards-Based Instruction in Chinese Language: From Theory to Practice.  This course is designed to provide the theory associated with effective classroom instruction to develop students' communicative competency in Chinese.  There will be an emphasis on the role of the teacher as an instructional planner in a student-centered classroom that effectively matches curriculum, instruction, and assessment to identified learner outcomes.

WHO: This program is open to both current teachers of Mandarin Chinese and those who are interested in teaching Chinese.
WHERE: Glastonbury Public Schools, Glastonbury, CT
WHEN:
Two program dates are available: July 2-13, 2012 (21st Century Skills and Chinese K-12 Standards) and July 16-27, 2012 (Standards-Based Instruction in Chinese Language: From Theory to Practice).

Summer Academic Program for Students

WHAT: A non-residential program that will allow beginning students of Russian to develop both speaking and writing abilities as well as the understanding of Russian culture. The program will include classroom instruction as well as cultural field trips.
WHO:
Rising 7th-12th  grade students in Glastonbury, CT, and rising 9th grade students in Fairfax County, VA. This is a non-residential program for students who reside in the Glastonbury and Fairfax areas.
WHEN AND WHERE: July 2-13, 2012, in Fairfax (9th graders) and July 2-27, 2012, in Glastonbury (7th-12th  graders), 9 am - 3 pm, Monday through Friday.

Students accepted into the program receive a scholarship. There is no cost to participate in the program. No transportation is provided.

Summer Academic Program for High School Students

WHAT: An intensive four-week non-residential program that will allow beginning and intermediate students of Chinese to develop both speaking and writing abilities as well as the understanding of Chinese culture. The program will include classroom instruction as well as cultural field trips.
WHO: Rising 7th - 12th grade students who are highly motivated and enthusiastic about learning Mandarin Chinese in an intensive program. This is a non-residential program for students who reside in the Glastonbury and Wallingford areas.
WHERE: Students will have the option of applying to participate in the Glastonbury Public Schools program for rising 7th - 12th graders (Glastonbury, CT) or the Choate Rosemary Hall program for rising 9th - 12th graders (Wallingford, CT).

WHEN: July 2-27, 2012, 9 am - 3 pm, Monday through Friday (no classes July 4)

Students accepted into the program receive a partial scholarship. There is a $150 tuition fee due upon acceptance into the program. No transportation is provided.
