The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Annual Convention and World Languages Expo provides you with an amazing educational journey. Join your colleagues from around the world for this incredible learning experience. You will have the option to choose from more than 700 educational sessions in a variety of formats covering a wide spectrum of the language profession. Visit with more than 250 exhibiting companies showcasing the latest products and services for you and your students. The ACTFL Convention is an international event bringing together more than 6,000 language educators from all languages, levels and assignments. Thought-provoking speakers will inspire you, innovative formats will keep you engaged, and smart practices will allow you to transform your classroom.
WHATS NEW FOR ACTFL 2015:
ACTFL always features some new and exciting educational experiences for attendees. You might think that the exhibit hall is strictly for companies displaying products – not anymore! ACTFL has added some new and exciting educational components in the Exhibit Hall this year. Come see!
You will be able to grab a cup of coffee and join Paula Patrick in the relaxed atmosphere of the new Career Café in the exhibit hall. Here you will have a chance to discuss the in’s and out’s of the career search process and how to market yourself with a focus on interviewing, resume writing for language instructors. You will also have a chance to learn from and share with other colleagues! Paula Patrick who will be hosting the discussions will also focus classroom management to help young teachers get off to a good start by establishing effective routines, fostering productive student-teacher relationships, and keeping students engaged in relevant learning activities. Learn strategies on how to succeed in your teaching career by working smarter and not harder.
ACTFL Co-lab Zone
The new ACTFL Co-lab Zone in the exhibit hall will feature times for demonstrating the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency (AAPPL) and Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) assessment tools and provide opportunities for collaborative discussions on which ACTFL assessment is right for your purpose, what they are and what they assess, how AAPPL can improve your classroom assessments, how ACTFL assessments can help you improve your feedback to your students, and how your learners can practice Interpersonal conversations. Bring your mobile devices and come learn all about the brand-new AAPPL Conversation Builder App. Get answers to questions such as: Why should I train as an OPI tester? How do I organize an OPI or MOPI workshop at my school? How do I make arrangements for official ACTFL testing through Language Testing International (LTI)?
Social Media Lounge
Once again this year Carmen Scoggins is hosting tweet-ups on various technology topics in the Social Media Lounge on such topics as:
- Tech Tools by the Modes of Communication,
- How to Create an Infographic,
- Cools Apps,
- Twitter Crash Course,
- Exit Ticket Ideas, and What's Trending (fun social media ideas).
You’ve seen TED Talks on YouTube; well, our current and former National Language Teachers of the Year will be conducting ACTFL’s version called TOY Talks.
They are all on Saturday afternoon from 4 - 6:15 p.m. and the stage will be set to replicate the TED Talk format. Here are the topics:
- Students Don’t Need a “Cushion” by Nicole Naditz;
- Impacting Student Achievement by Hearing What Teachers Need by Lisa Lilley;
- Balance: Listening to the Voices of Students and Teachers by Toni Theisen;
- Connected Circles...Skipping Stones...Spheres of Influence by Christine Lanphere;
- Envisioning the Win: Coaching for Intrinsic Motivation by Linda Egnatz; and
- Recognizing Assets & Opening Doors by Noah Geisel.
Rick Steves to Keynote ACTFL 2015
The renowned guidebook author and travel television host will deliver the keynote address during the Opening General Session on Friday morning, November 20, 2015.
